Designed For

The Preliminary Works (Domestic) short course is designed for:

  • Builders, project managers, site managers, forepersons, construction managers and;
  • other building practitioners who prepare permits, contracts, and schedule labour and materials.

This short course is for those who wish to become an appropriately registered person with responsibility under Victorian building legislation.

Course Overview

The Preliminary Works (Domestic) course outlines how to manage the building approval application process, including the required documentation and current regulatory and planning processes. The course explains how to select and prepare construction contracts. Finally, this course outlines how to produce a schedule of resource requirements for materials and labour and how to record (and track) costs.

This short course covers the main additional units of competency (outlined in Schedule 7 of the Building Interim Regulations 2017) to prepare those wanting to apply for Domestic Builder (Limited) registration.

Mode of Delivery

This course is delivered in a blended mode with face-to-face classes and assessments to be submitted online on the learning management system.

Entry Requirements

Due to the accelerated nature of this course, it is recommended that students have at least three years experience in the building and construction industry.

Learning Outcomes

Students that complete this course will gain skills and knowledge on the following topics:

  • arrange building and planning permits
  • prepare a construction contract
  • produce labour and material schedules
  • monitor project costs

Successful students who only undertake this short course will be issued with a Statement of Attainment by Master Builders Association of Victoria.
